Lavenders are looking at the best right now and apart from their divine scent they have various medicinal and culinary uses. While not being long-lived they are hardy and undemanding plants provided they are planted in a sunny spot. To prevent them becoming leggy prune back quite ruthlessly after flowering. Cut back between a third and a half removing flowers and some foliage but try not to cut back into old wood. Before autumn they will have grown back into a neat dome shape and will be hardy enough to get through the winter.
